The Public Interest Advisory Group is a group of faculty, staff and students dedicated to the promotion of pro bono and public interest at the law school. Some activities of the group include:
Distinguished Public Interest Visitor Series
Academics and practitioners are invited to the law shcool each year to offer workshops and lectures. Recent past speakers have included Ann Beeson, litigation director for the ACLU; Stephen Bright, director of the Southern Center for Human Rights; Lt Cdr Charles Swift; Harold Koh, dean, Yale Law School; and President Jimmy Carter.
Public Interest Dinner Series
A selected group of first-year students participates in an annual dinner series with public interest faculty and community leaders. Past dinner speakers have included Salbiah Ahmed, Fellow in Islam and Human Rights; Gerry Weber, Legal Director of the Georgia ACLU; Tom Cox and Amy Totenberg, attorneys practicing education and school law; Sylvia Caley, Director of Health Law Partnership (HeLP); and Sharon Nelson Hill, Executive Director of Georgia Appleseed. Specific topics are chosen to reflect the interests of the participants, which have included in the past discussion of areas such as child advocacy, education law, juvenile defense, gay and lesbian civil rights, immigration and environmental law. Customarily, one dinner each year is held at the State Capitol where the students meet with legilslators who discuss legislation pending before the Georgia State legislature.
