Emory Law School '00 Alum, Brad Gardner, leads a panel of experienced indigent criminal defense attorneys. Mr. Gardner serves as the Vice President of Georgia Association Criminal Defense Lawyers and is a Staff Attorney at Georgia Capital Defenders. The panel also included Laila Washington and Ruth McMullin '00 Emory Law School Alum, both Assistant Public Defenders from the DeKalb County Public Defender's office.
With the assistance of some extremely talented and entertaining Emory staff, ICDC student-attorneys practice their interviewing skills in anticipation of meeting their first client. A very special thanks to Andy Boyles, Dell Jackson, Fontain Johnson, Danny Kim, Keith Miller, and Jonathan Wagner.
ICDC students, faculty, orientation speakers, and defense attorneys gather for a luncheon honoring the many people responsible for bringing ICDC into existence.
Mike Mears gave an inspiring talk to the ICDC students in which he emphasized the importance of indigent defense work as illustrated by the facts surrounding the prosecution, conviction, and ultimate acquittal upon retrial of Clarence Earl Gideon. Mr. Gideon's case led to the landmark decision of Gideon v. Wainwright (1963) in which the Supreme Court first recognized the constitutional right for appointed counsel. On retrial, Mr. Gideon's appointed counsel secured an acquittal.
Mike Mears urged ICDC students to think of every client's case as a case that could change the legal landscape.
Sgt. Mears from the DeKalb County Police Department met with ICDC students and shared an inside view of the dangers of police work.
