1) personal statement,

2)  resume, and

3)  either

(a) work reference letter

OR

(b) writing sample.

The Personal Statement

Your personal statement should describe in detail your interest in this clinic.  You should identify any special qualifications, academic interests, and career goals that caused you to apply to ICDC.  You might also consider including answers to any of the following questions.

What do you hope to gain from this experience?

What do you have to offer to your fellow ICDC students?

What type of representation can your client expect from you?

Selected third year students will represent actual clients charged with misdemeanor crimes.  They will work on criminal justice reform efforts and community outreach projects.  It is important that the students in ICDC be zealous advocates for their clients.  Your personal statement should include a sentence or two about your perception of what it means to be a zealous advocate.

Writing Sample or Work-Related Reference Letter

You may submit EITHER a writing sample or a reference letter from any previous employer.  Do NOT submit both.  Please do not submit reference letters from faculty unless you have worked for them.  It is NOT necessary that the previous employment be law-related.  This information will be used to anticipate the quality of your work at the ICDC.  Therefore, you should submit whatever writing sample or work-related reference letter that you feel best describes your work ethic, advocacy skills, and/or legal analysis or strategy.
