David J. Bederman
Professor of Law

David Bederman teaches public international law, legal methods, admiralty, international institution, law of international common spaces, and customary law, as well as seminars on international environmental law and foreign relations power. In addition, Professor Bederman serves as adviser to the Emory International Law Review. He also is director of International Legal Studies at Emory Law.

Prior to joining the Emory faculty, Professor Bederman practiced law in Washington, D.C., with the firm of Covington & Burling and worked as a legal adviser at the Iran/U.S. Claims Tribunal at The Hague. Professor Bederman has published extensively on diverse legal topics, including legal history, constitutional law, and international legal theory and practice.

William W. Buzbee
Professor of Law

William Buzbee specializes in environmental law, land-use law, administrative law, regulation and regulatory reform, and federalism. In addition to teaching courses and publishing scholarship in these areas, Professor Buzbee helped found the Turner Environmental Law Clinic and continues to serve on the clinic’s legal advisory board.

Before coming to Emory, Professor Buzbee practiced environmental and land-use law and was a litigator in New York City. He practiced with a private sector law firm and as an attorney-fellow with the Natural Resources Defense Council. In a pro bono capacity, he has assisted with environmental justice civil rights disputes for community groups linked with national civil rights organizations, litigated for the NAACP Legal Defense Fund in a case involving housing discrimination, and assisted with a Human Rights Watch investigation. He also has served as legal adviser to the Upper Chattahoochee Riverkeeper and is the vice president and litigation chair of the board of the Georgia Center for Law in the Public Interest, one of Georgia’s more active environmentally focused nonprofit organizations.

Jim Grode
Director of the Turner Environmental Law Clinic

Jim Grode came to Emory Law in 2007 with several years of experience in environmental litigation. Grode previously worked for the Southern Environmental Law Center (SELC) where he specialized in water and air quality litigation and policy. Before joining the SELC, Grode was in private practice in Charlotte, N.C. As director of the Turner Environmental Law Clinic, Grode supervises students working on important litigation and legislative efforts to protect the natural environment.

Larry D. Sanders
Staff Attorney

Larry Sanders joined Emory Law in 2002 as staff attorney in the Turner Environmental Law Clinic and as co-teacher in environmental advocacy. Prior to coming to Emory, Sanders founded and served as director of RiverLaw at the South Yuba River Citizens League in Northern California. He also spent several years in private practice, representing individuals, businesses, and environmental groups in litigation and transactional matters.

Sanders has extensive litigation experience under the Endangered Species Act, National Environmental Policy Act, Clean Water Act, Freedom of Information Act, and other federal statutes. His areas of expertise include endangered species, public lands, water resources, and not-for-profit tax and corporation law.

Adjuncts
Certain environmental law course are taught by practicing attorneys from law firms with established environmental practices, from federal or state environmental agencies, and from nongovernmental organizations in the Atlanta area.
