"The essence of law lies in its public nature; the legal profession is first and foremost a service profession. Public interest work - whether in the public sector or in the broad range of not-for-profit opportunities - represents the vital core of the legal profession."
- Frank S. Alexander, Professor of Law

Emory is a great place to learn and experience public interest law! Situated in Atlanta, birthplace of the civil rights movement, Emory offers a wide variety of opportunities to study and practice law in the public interest. Emory is formally associated with the internationally-renowned Carter Center, founded by former U.S. President Jimmy Carter to promote democracy and human rights around the world. In addition, Atlanta is at the heart of criminal justice reform in the south, with leading organizations such as the Southern Center for Human Rights, which enforces civil and human rights within the criminal justice system. Atlanta is also home to the South's largest environmental organization, the Southern Environmental Law Center.
Emory offers a range of classes, field placements, student organizations, events, and other programs that allow students to explore public interest opportunities. Additionally, Emory hosts four in-house clinics that give students hands-on experience: Barton Child Law and Policy Clinic, Barton Juvenile Defender Clinic, Turner Environmental Clinic, and the International Humanitarian Law Clinic.
