From the My Account screen, enter your Emory ID number and renew materials (to look up your Emory ID number, go to http://www.library.emory.edu/uhtbin/nph-emoryID).

Items may be renewed online on or before their due date. If items are past their due date or have exceeded the allowed number of renewals, they must be brought to the Library for renewal. Courtesy notices are sent via email one week prior to Law materials due date to help facilitate renewals.

    Fines

There is a daily fine of $0.25 for each overdue book. Fines may be paid at the Circulation Desk by check or, once billed, through the Bursar's Office, or via O.P.U.S. (https://psoftsa.cc.emory.edu/). Fines are charged only for days when the library is open. The intentional damaging of library materials is a Professional Conduct Code violation.

    Carrel Check-out

Law students and groups may check-out certain books to library carrels for a designated period of time. Check-out cards and carrel regulations are available at the Circulation Desk.

    Lost and Found

Articles found in the library are held at the Circulation Desk for one semester. The Circulation Desk will make every attempt to contact patrons who have lost items with their name on it. Patrons who believe they have lost an article in the Library should come to the desk, or call 404-727-6824 to check if the item has been turned in. If not, Desk staff will take your contact information and a description of the item and will call you should the item be turned in to the Lost and Found.

    Lost Books

Law materials are considered lost if not returned 8 weeks after their original due date. There is a $70 fee for each lost book ($45 for replacement of the book, $25 processing fee). Lost books may be replaced by patrons, if they can supply the same edition. Any replacement books must be given to the Circulation Supervisor before the lost book reaches 8 weeks overdue. Replacement books will be subject to a $25 processing fee and $10 binding fee if the replacement book is paperback.

    Missing Book Searches

Books which patrons are not able to locate can be searched by Library staff. Please come to the Circulation Desk to fill out a search form. Items will be searched three times over the course of three weeks. Library staff will notify patrons via email or phone with the results of these searches.

    Recalling Books

Items checked out to patrons can be recalled, via Euclid, in person or via phone. To recall an item listed in Euclid as checked out, simply click the blue "REQUEST" button at the top or bottom of the search screen and follow instructions -- you will need your Emory ID number. You may also come to the Circulation Desk, or call 404-727-6824, to fill out a recall request. Library staff will notify you when the book is available for checkout. Library staff ask that all patrons comply with any recall request as promptly as possible as a courtesy to others. Failure to return recalled items within 10 days may result in a $50 fine.

    Computer-Assisted Legal Research

The use of the library's LEXIS and Westlaw subscriptions is restricted to Emory Law School faculty, staff, and students and may be used only for authorized Law School-related purposes. Any unauthorized use of the computer systems for non-Law School related activities, including jobs outside of the Law School, is a violation of the Professional Conduct Code.  While it is technically possible to print more than 200 pages a day, the Emory rule restricts students to 200 pages per day per service, so that all students have access to printers and are not burdened by students who print excessively. Violations of this printing policy will be reported to the Assistant Dean of Student Affairs.

    Computers

    1. Use of all Computer Lab equipment is limited to current Emory Law School students, faculty, and staff. Use by other persons is strictly prohibited.

    2. Computers are for use of current law students only and are password-protected. Students are issued user IDs and passwords by the Computing Department. For assistance please see the Computer Help Desk. Students should not disclose their passwords to any other persons.

    3. The Computer Labs are generally open when the library is open and close 15 minutes before the library closes. The Computer Classrooms will be reserved for training or maintenance from time-to-time, and users should be cooperative in leaving the room.

    4. Computers are available on a first come, first served basis. Computers may not be saved or reserved in advance for individual use. Lab staff are authorized to make any computer unattended for more than fifteen minutes available to another user.

    5. Each law student is given a free printing allowance for the year. For academic year 2003/2004, the allowance is 500 pages to be used by August 1, 2004. After the printing allowance is used up, the cost of printing is $.09 per page. Printouts are made using the EmoryCard system, which is the same card used for photocopying.

    6. Students should not tamper with the networked printers or attempt to add paper or toner. However, students are expected to supply their own paper and envelopes for the stand-alone Resume/Cover Letter printers.

    7. Lab software that is copyrighted may not be copied. Students may not install any software program or utility on any lab computer nor tamper with, alter, or delete any software program or utility from any lab computer.

    8. Students are provided with 4 megabytes of network storage space. Files may not be saved to the local hard drive. Files saved to the local hard drive are subject to deletion without notice. All lab PC's are also equipped with ZIP drives for file storage.

    9. In the event of problems with software or equipment, notify the Computer Support Desk (727-6865) immediately. Users should not tamper with the computer hardware in any way.

    10. The Lab computers have virus protection software and will give an alert if an infected disk is inserted into the floppy drive. For questions about disinfecting a disk with a virus, see the Computer Support Desk. It is highly recommended that all users install virus protection software on their personal computers. The University licenses Symantec antivirus Software (http://userwww.service.emory.edu/~bjchapm/antivirus_faq/).

    11. Violation or abuse of any policy, equipment, or lab staff member will be reported to the Dean of Student Affairs and may result in suspension or revocation of lab privileges.

    E-Mail and Internet Use

Use of the Law School's e-mail and Internet services is a privilege and comes with the responsibility to respect the rights of other users and the rights of the Law School and the University. Law School users are subject to the University's Information Technology Use Policy.

For specific instances of prohibited behavior, see the University's Guidelines on the Ethical Use of Information Technology. Violations of these policies may result in suspension of privileges, initiation of formal University disciplinary procedures, or in extreme cases, criminal prosecution under federal or state law. For policy issues regarding the Law School's electronic resources, contact the law school IT help number, 404-727-5321.

    Library Courtesy

Please be courteous to other library users. Talking should be limited and at a level that does not disturb other researchers. Users should not block traffic patterns or sit on the floor between ranges, limiting access to materials. Chairs should be pushed in when tables or computer terminals are vacated. Chairs or tables that are moved should be returned to their original locations.

    Library Use

The Hugh F. MacMillan Law Library is primarily for the use of the Emory Law School community. We also welcome the faculty, students, staff, and alumni of Emory University, members of the bench and bar, and others with a need to use the resources of the Library.

    Personal Belongings

No personal belongings such as textbooks, study materials, notes, etc. should be stored or left unattended in the Law Library. Unattended personal property found in the Law Library will be treated as "Lost and Found."

    Reshelving Books

Users should reshelve reporters, digests, law reviews and other materials in heavy demand. This is a courtesy owed to other library users. Intentionally misshelving, hiding, or damaging library property, or intentionally removing library property from the library without authorization is considered a Professional Conduct Code violation.

    Stacking Privileges

Study tables and carrels may not be reserved for individual use. Emory law students may check out certain materials to third and fourth floor carrels. Books must be properly checked out at Circulation or they will be reshelved. For further information ask for a carrel rules sheet at the Circulation Desk. Stacks of books with "Save" signs will be reshelved after 24 hours.

    Telephones

There are pay telephones in the east stairwell on 2nd and 3rd floor of the library. There are also free local telephones on floors 1-4. The Law Library's office telephones are for the use of the library staff. Library patrons may not receive or place personal telephone calls on staff telephones.
