Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I got a notice about this book.  What does it mean?  Do I owe money?

A: That depends on what kind of notice you received and what sort of patron you are.

  • The library sends out courtesy notices 7 days prior to the book's due date via email (paper notices are sent if there is no email address in your record).  This is just to help patrons remember to renew or return their books to avoid fines altogether, but ultimately all materials checked out to you are your responsibility.  You can keep track of what you have checked out and renew materials online by going to EUCLID and clicking on the "My Account" button.

  • Overdue notices are sent every Tuesday via email (paper notices are sent if there is no email address in your record).  We will send out a total of 3 overdue notices over a period of 3 consecutive weeks (provided that you don't return the book; once the book is checked in, the notices stop).

  • Bill notices are sent out via both paper and email when items reach 6 weeks overdue.  These are warnings to remind patrons that if they do not return books before they reach 8 weeks overdue, their account will be charged for the replacement cost of the item plus a $25.00 processing fee.  Please note In the interest of fairness, all items are checked for their true cost before being billed.  When items are billed as lost, overdue fees are waived.

  • If you are an Emory student and you have fines or replacement costs, these will be billed directly to your OPUS account every Tuesday.

  • If you are an Emory staff or faculty member, any charges which you incur will be billed to your account.  Excessive bills on your account may result in your record being blocked by the Emory library system.

  • If you are an Emory alumnus or a current student in good standing of the GETS or ARCHE constortial groups, your record will be blocked when bills against your account reach $20.

  • To pay a bill at the law library please come to the Circulation desk to pay by check (sorry, no cash or credit cards) or you can send a check by mail to Circulation, Law Library, 1301 Clifton Road, Atanta GA 30322.

Q: What is the difference between "LOST" and "MISSING"?

A: Missing books are items whose last known location was in the library.  Since then, someone has initiated a search for the item in question and it could not be found.  Lost books were last known to have been checked out to a patron and never returned.  If the item you need is marked either missing or lost, you may suggest that the library re-purchase the item, or submit and InterLibrary Loan request for it.

Q: Euclid says this book I want is 'on order'; when can I get it?

A: Unfortunately, that is not under the library's control.  Sometimes vendors take a long time to get books to us, and some materials never arrive at all.  Your best bet for these things is to submit an ILL request via ILLIAD if you are an Emory student, staff, or faculty member.  All other patrons should check with their local public library.

Q: Do you have this book for my class?

A: The Reserve desk has all textbooks available for 2 hour, in-house check out.   Unfortunately, not all textbooks are available at the start of the semester, some may be on order - please check EUCLID  to see if we have your text yet or not.  For those who need to purchase texts, the Law School uses the Druid Hills Bookstore (404) 727-2665.

Q: I'm not an Emory student - can I use the library?

A: Yes, anyone with a research need may use the library's print collections between opening and 4pm.  After 4pm our doors are closed to those outside the Emory community.
