Regulations for Law Library Carrels

1.  Library Materials can be checked out to a carrel by current law students.  Any other library patron may use any carrel for reading or study, but carrels cannot be reserved for individual use by visitors during the academic year.

Currently enrolled Emory Law students may check out up to 30 books while actively working on an Emory Law Journal Paper, Moot Court Team Brief, a Faculty Research Project, Law School class or Seminar Paper.

2.  The following MAY NOT BE CHECKED OUT TO A CARREL:

  • Reserve items
  • Rare Books
  • Reference Materials
  • Single issues of periodicals

Please note that many more types of materials will circulate to a carrel than to a patron (Core 1 and 2 materials, Government Documents, periodicals and multi-volume sets), which makes using a carrel for in-depth research projects ideal.

3.  Completely fill out two GREEN CARREL SLIPS for each item checked out to a carrel.  Give the green carrel slip to the circulation attendant.  A due date will be stamped on each slip.  One copy of the carrel slip will be filed at the Circulation Desk.  The other copy must be placed in the book so that the date stamp is visible at the top of the book.  Place the books on the top shelf of the third or fourth floor carrel you have selected.

The book charged on this slip must remain in the designated carrel.  When the book is no longer needed, turn the green slip upside down.  Either leave the book in the carrel or return it to the Circulation Desk.  Please do not re-shelve the book.

4.  Charge-out time is four weeks.  Books may be renewed once. Items will be checked-out in Euclid to the assigned carrel and will appear in the catalog as “carrel.” Please see Circulation Staff for help locating material which appears this way in EUCLID.  For your convenience, we place a courtesy notice on the carrel 7 days before the books are due.  If you wish to renew the books, please bring the green carrel slips to the Circulation Desk to be re-stamped.

5.  Books will be removed from the carrel, checked-in and re-shelved if:

  • they do not meet the above regulations.
  • the books are past due.
  • the borrower’s copy of the green slip is inverted, indicating book should be re-shelved.
  • they are checked out to other than a numbered carrel.

6.  Personal belongings should not be left in the carrels.  Any books not from the Law Library must have a “Library Use Only” sticker on them (your personal books, ILL materials, books from Woodruff, Theology, etc.).  The stickers are available at the Circulation desk.

7.  Library Patrons who wish to consult a book checked out to a carrel should use it at the carrel and replace it with its green slip when they are done.  Do not remove items from carrels.

8.  DO NOT PILE OPENED BOOKS ON TOP OF EACH OTHER.  Mark places in books with slips of paper and stand books on carrel shelf.

9.  NO FOOD may be brought into the Library.  Water bottles are permitted.  Other beverages must be in a Library authorized cup.

10.  Failure to comply with Library regulations is a violation of the Emory Law School Honor Code.
