Computer and Software Recommendations
Law Students Must Own a Computer
Emory Law School requires students to own a computer system. Most students choose to buy a notebook computer so that they can use it while at the Law School or the Law Library. The Law School is equipped with a high-speed wireless network and most faculty members permit students to use notebook computers to take notes during class. Almost all students write their exams on notebook computers. When considering the purchase of a notebook computer for law school it's important that you consider the following items:
- Nearly all exams at Emory Law School are given on computer so a notebook computer is highly recommended.
- If you purchase a notebook computer consider buying a second power adapter to leave at school.
- Purchase a three year warranty with your new system.
Apple Notebook
We recommend the MacBook Air or Pro with the following minimum specs:
- Intel i5 processor
- 4GB RAM
- Mac OS X Lion
- Microsoft Office Mac 2011
- 3 year AppleCare Protection Plan
Windows Notebook
We do not have specific recommendations for a PC manufacturer. However, we strongly recommend that the minimum specifications be as below:
- Intel i5 processor, maximum speed available
- 4GB RAM
- Windows 7 Home Premium
- Microsoft Office 2010
- A MINIMUM 3 year (preferably on-site) warranty
Tips for using your computer at Emory Law School
- Bring the original restore disks that came with your computer with you to Atlanta. We can't help you restore your system unless you have them.
- Back up your documents frequently! We really mean this - get a thumb drive or an external hard drive and use it. Sign up for a Dropbox account or get familiar with GoogleDocs.
Office Suite
As a law student, Microsoft Office will be an essential tool. Microsoft makes Microsoft Office 2010 and Office 2011 for Mac available to students for a discounted price of $99.95 (compared to the retail price of $408.96). Microsoft offers this discounted price so that students will buy legitimate copies of Microsoft Office rather than using stolen or "cracked" versions. We will not support illegally obtained versions of Microsoft Office. Please buy a legitimate version of the current MS Office suite.
Please visit UltimateSteal.com to purchase these discounted Windows or Mac versions of Microsoft Office.
Alternatively, you can use free, open-source Office suite software such as Libre Office which offers much compatibility with Microsoft Office formats. To download Libre Office, please visit: http://www.libreoffice.org/download/.
Anti-virus software
News flash: Emory has just adopted McAfee and will be moving from Symantec to McAfee this fall. Check back this fall to see what anti-virus options are available to students this fall.
In addition to an office suite, you will need anti-virus software and anti-spyware software. The University has purchased a site license for Symantec anti-virus software. Students can download and install Symantec Endpoint Protection for free at the website below. We encourage Mac users to install the anti-virus software as well. If you are running a Windows computer, you will have to determine if you're running a 64-bit or 32-bit version of the operating system. To determine which version you have, please follow the instructions here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/827218.
- If you have a 64-bit version of Windows, please install the SEP version entitled: Symantec Endpoint Protection 11 RU6a x64.
- If you have a 32-bit version of Windows, please install the SEP version entitled: Symantec Endpoint Protection 11 RU6a x32.
- If you are running Mac OS, please install the SEP version entitled: Symantec Endpoint Protection 11 RU6 Mac.
Once you have determined the version, please proceed to this site to download: https://software.emory.edu/express/ (Emory NetID and password required)
Printer
While not required, we recommend that you buy a black and white laser printer. The law school provides print services via a cluster of two high-speed laser printers and a third color laser printer. However, you will discover that there are many times during the year when there are long lines waiting for print jobs from the law school printers.
Consider purchasing a laser printer like the Brother HL-2270DW or similar. It's often on sale for $99 and is wireless, does duplex, and is easy to set up. Also, unlike some other similarly priced printers it's fully supported on the Mac as well as Windows. It does not support AirPrint. Again - the price is compelling. If you're getting a printer for home, get one with similar specs and reviews.
