OUTLaw LGBT Scholarship Kick-Off!
Please join OUTLaw as we kick-off our initiative to endow an LGBT scholarship at Emory Law.
Given the passage of Prop 8 in California and anti-marriage amendments in Florida and Arizona, as well as the recent anti-gay violence in our Midtown community, attracting the next generation of LGBT leaders to Atlanta and Emory Law is more important than ever.
Come, eat, drink, have fun, and learn more about what will be just the second LGBT law scholarship offered by a top-tier law school and only the fourth in the entire country. Student tickets are just $10 and include liquor, wine, soda, and hor d'ouerves! Pre-register at www.law.emory.edu/outlawrsvp.
We look forward to seeing you Wednesday, March 25th from 6 to 8 at the Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams Store in Buckhead to help support this very important endeavor!

Protesting and Educating about Don't Ask Don't Tell: Coming in February
Again this year the branches of the military will be interviewing for JAG positions on campus, but not offering them to gay lawyers. I think I might apply to see what happens, and Emory OutLaw will be protesting in some way, perhaps including a speaker. Check back in February for more info.
Name Change! We are now Emory OutLaws!
Stonewall Bar Association Mixer: Feb 26, 2009
At Amsterdam Bar in Midtown. And student membership is now free, so everyone should join!
Service with CHRIS Kids Rainbow Program: March 17, 2009
- We might be preparing and serving meals at CHRIS Kids Rainbow Program (for homeless and runaway LGBT youth). OutLaw would prepare and serve a family style dinner and then guest speak about academics or law (possibly team up with the Know Your Rights & StreetLaw Program here at Emory to discuss legal rights when interacting with law enforcement). Let an officer know if you are interested in making this event happen!
Human Rights Campaign Dinner: May 2
Anyone interested in forming an Emory OutLaw group? Tickets are $100/students if we can get a group of 10 together. Contact an officer if you want to go.

Five years after Lambda Legal's historic Lawrence v. Texas victory, it's time to take a fresh look at the case and consider its effect to date. Justice Kennedy, writing for the majority, noted that "As the Constitution endures, persons in every generation can invoke its principles in their own search for greater freedom." Taking this perspective, this symposium explores how the law should advance with respect to sexual orientation and gender identity.
Lambda Legal speakers include Senior Counsel Susan Sommer and Legal Director Jon W. Davidson, with a keynote address by Supreme Court litigator Paul Smith, Partner at Jenner & Block. Join us for lively and engaging discussion on key constitutional and legal issues affecting the equality, liberty and daily lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.

LGBT Technical and Research Assistant Position
The Center for Gay and Lesbian Studies (CLAGS) is looking for a Technical and Research Assistant to help in the formation of a website on the histories of LGBTQ people. The majority of the Technical and Research Assistant position entails web-based work -- uploading files, inserting content, categorizing and formatting historical entries for the prototype of the website, as well as editing finished pages. The Technical and Research Assistant may also help in the development of the site’s help pages. A high level of comfort with technology is required and prior experience with wiki-style websites is preferred.
The Technical and Research Assistant may also have the opportunity to work more closely with scholars in the field, providing support for research and technological needs. This is an ideal position for a student interested in both sexuality studies and the development of electronic resources. The Technical and Research Assistant may work remotely but should be available to work occasionally from the CLAGS office located at the CUNY Graduate Center.
This temporary three month position will start at the beginning of April and last through June. Depending on the needs of the project, the hours and duration of employment may increase. $14 per hour for an average of 12-15 hrs per week
Send resume, cover letter and contact information for two references to outhistory(at)gc.cuny.edu by March 28, 2008. Please include “Technical and Research Assistant position” in the subject line.
Requirments:
Close attention to detail and uniformity
Familiarity with tagging and classification systems
Basic html, wiki
Familiarity with web page layout and usability factors
Demonstrated interest in history, LGBTQ studies, and/or electronic resource development
Familiarity with scanning and Photoshop
Clock in Against Workplace Discrimination
Almost 90 percent of people in this country believe workplace discrimination is wrong, but how many have ever been asked to do something about it? Who can help?
You can.
Join us on May 15 for the Clock In Pledge-a-Thon for Workplace Equality. Whether it’s sexual orientation, gender identity or HIV status, workplace concerns are still the number one topic for Lambda Legal's Help Desk callers. Making a pledge is a simple way for you to show your support.
Last year over 240 organizations and another 1,300 individuals participated in Lambda Legal’s first ever national day of action for workplace equality. This year our goal is to build even more support for workplace equality. Together, we can get thousands to sign by May 15.
Sign the pledge today. Encourage others to do the same. Let’s see how many of us are truly committed to help combat workplace discrimination!
