Disposing of Old Computers and other Electronics

See the excellent Georgia Department of Consumer Affairs Guide  (pdf format) listed below. In addition, here are some other helpful suggestions from Emory computer professionals on campus:

Donate them to a non-profit organization.

Some would like a cash  donation with the non-cash item if it is not in perfect working order. Examples:

  • Lullwater School  (contact eehrenh@emory.edu)
  • Project Reboot (www.gatfl.org/reboot/default.htm)
  • Find a charity which is not fully computer enabled and start to build them an infrastructure. One way to start is to use a CD like WebConverger
    • With a bootable CD like Web Converger, users won't even need a hard disk.

Offer them to people who need them via FreeCycle

Throw it away in a clean and responsible way

Many PC sales outlets will dispose of old gear for a small fee. Keep in mind that this stuff should not go into the land fill, as it is filled with noxious chemicals. Office Depot and Micro Center have been two that have been used in the past.
