As a new student (whether you are a 1L, LLM student, transfer, or transient student), there are several technology-related tasks that you need to accomplish to take advantage of the technology environment here. This document walks you through those steps.
To obtain your University NetID and initial password, go to https://www.app.emory.edu/acm/getpassword.cfm. After receiving your main campus account information, you should immediately change your initial password by visiting http://password.service.emory.edu
This NetID and password will be used for accessing all University services, including the student records and scheduling application, Opus.
Note: Please take a moment and update your contact information, including your local address, in Opus. It's not hard to do and it will make it much easier for the University to get information to you.
To use the University web mail server, go to https://webmail.service.emory.edu/ and log in with your University user name and password. Usage of the web mail server should be straightforward. If you need help with the web mail service, take a look at the help documents or use the help functions provided within the web mail.
You can also configure a standalone email client that you use from your personal laptop or desktop computer. The chosen email client (Thunderbird, Outlook, Outlook Express, Eudora, etc.) should be configured to connect to the server with IMAP (Internet Mail Access Protocol). The incoming mail server is imap.service.emory.edu. The outgoing mail server is smtp.service.emory.edu.
If you need assistance configuring your client, please contact the Client Services Call Center by telephone at 404-727-7777 (7-7777 if you are on campus) or electronically request support.
Your primary Emory email address will be your University NetID followed by "@emory.edu". As a convenience to our new students, we also set up an alias at the law school so that mail that is addressed to your University NetID + "@law.emory.edu" will be properly forwarded to your University account. Some students prefer to advertise the law school email address, rather than their University address. Remember, you will always check your mail at the University mail server, regardless of whether it is addressed to the law.emory.edu alias or to your University mail address. Also, if you wish to advertise your law school address, you should go into your email program or into web mail and change the "reply to" address to use your law school email address.
To summarize: if your Emory NetID is jsmith2, then your Emory email address is jsmith2@emory.edu, and we've also created jsmith2@law.emory.edu as an alias. You will check your email by logging into the University web mail server at webmail.service.emory.edu . To use that service, you will log in with your Univeristy NetID and password.
As if this wasn't confusing enough, there are other email options that you should be aware of. Emory offers you the option of using an additional alias: firstname dot lastname at emory dot edu. So, bjchapm@emory.edu becomes ben.chapman@emory.edu. To set this up, go to the Emory University email alias page and log in and select an alias.
When you establish an Emory email alias, your email alias will be listed in both the printed and on-line directories. If you are not using an Emory email alias, use PEACH to designate an existing email account as your preferred email address, and have it listed in the on-line directory. You may also use PEACH to change the address that appears in the printed Campus Directory.
Be aware that this only adds a new address. It does not take away either of the two addresses that you already have. At the conclusion of the alias process, you might be reachable at the following addresses:
It is not possible to alias your law school address at this time.
If you don't want to use the University system at all, you can arrange to forward all your mail somewhere else. Log in to the University web mail server and look for "options". Keep in mind that you may have trouble posting from an off-campus address to a mailing list or class list. Also, the University will communicate with you at your University address. Do not expect University communications (including communications from your faculty members) to be directed to any address other than a law school or University address. It's up to you to handle forwarding from the University or law school address to another service if you choose to use one.
We recommend that you own and use a laptop computer while you are in law school. The laptop computer will make it much easier for you to participate in our computerized exam program and will make it easier for you to take advantage of the law school wireless network. Please click here for a list of recommended systems.
Ask if you have questions. Please ask us if you have questions about these instructions. You may email early in the semester as more and more communication is being handled via email. If you have questions about University email addresses or changing your preferred email address, or the email alias system, please contact the University help desk at 727-7777.
