Network Printing at Emory Law

Introduction

We have upgraded our printing system to make it much easier to install and use network-connected printers within the library and law school. For students, this means that you can now print to the student lab printers directly from your network-connected laptop.

We are using Novell's Internet Printing Protocol ("IPP") to enable cross-platform network printing. IPP allows people such as students and business partners who don't have the Novell client installed a painless way to print to our network-attached printers no matter where the print users are located. You can even ask someone in Beijing to print directly to one of our network printers using IPP. It works for Windows, Mac OS (Intel based Macs click here), and Linux.

View all of our IPP-enabled printers by clicking on this link:

els417.law.emory.edu/ipp/

Windows XP/Mac OS (Macbook or Macbook Pro click here)

In order to print to one of our IPP-enabled printers, you first need to install some software. First you will need to install the IPP print software, and then you will need to install the particular printer that you want to use (for example, the studentlab printer).

  1. Go to els417.law.emory.edu/ipp/
  2. Click on the link to the printer you want to install.
  3. It will prompt you to install the Novell IPP client.
  4. Depending on your browser, you may need to save the file to your desktop, rather than running it from within your browser. If you saved the file, don't forget to double-click on it to run it. After the software is installed, you must completely close out your browser.
  5. Once you've exited your browser, re-start it and navigate to the same page. Click on the name of the printer that you want to install. This time, because you already have the IPP software installed, it will just install the printer driver.
  6. That's it. You should be able to use that printer like any other printer. You can even use it to print from home.

Windows Vista

The following steps will enable Windows Vista users to print to our network printers.

  1. Go to Microsoft's Add Printer Wizard
  2. Choose Network Printer
  3. Click the "Stop" button to stop the wizard from scanning for network printers
  4. Select 'The printer that I want isn't listed'
  5. Select the first 'shared printer by name' box
  6. Type the folowing URL:

      http://170.140.174.17/ipps/lab_a
And put your novell userid and password in the Vista authentication box.

  7. Select the appropriate printer driver
  8. Finish the installation
