Back to Organizations main During the 1990's, Israel has increasingly blocked university students from studying at universities in the West Bank by means of restricting freedom of movement and rights of residence. According to AFF, the permit system imposed by Israel on the students is arbitrary and discriminatory, and fails to consider the calendar of the academic setting. The system outlaws students collectively and without recourse. The AFF website acts as an awareness campaign, sharing information, news, alerts, and links to similar organizations. It also documents violations against the university itself, including army raids, closures, restrictions, and discrimination.In recent years, HRAP has expanded its work to include the encouragement of the rule of law and respect for basic standards of human rights by the Palestinian National Authority. GCMHP's three centers in Gaza, Khan Younis, and Jabalaya extend their services to all sectors of society with emphasis on victims of domestic and political violence particularly women, children, and victims of human rights violations. One major project of the GCMHP is the Women's Empowerment Project (WEP). The first Women's Empowerment Project was established in 1995 in Gaza City. The network was established in 1998 by a group of Palestinians who felt the need to reorganize the grassroots in Palestine and in the diaspora. Its main criterium is drawn from a human rights perspective. What is happening in Palestine is one huge human rights violation after another. This aspect of the conflict, the fact that there are no human dignity left and that the defense of Palestinians basic rights is being lost in so-called "security-debates", is one of the main starting points of this network. Through advocacy and grassroots activism Hanthala established itself as an active network involved in various coalitions and networks, using communication-technology as a tool to mobilize the grassroots dedicated to human rights and international law. In 1992, as the technical committees were formed during the preparations for the Israeli-Palestinian negotiations, closer cooperation developed between three of these political women's committees and independent female professionals. Because there was little representation of women within the various technical committees and no body to address the specific issues and needs of women, there was a demand for the establishment of a technical committee for women, and thus, in August 1992, the Women's Affairs Technical Committee (WATC) was established. Today, the WATC, a respected Palestinian non-governmental organization, is a coalition of women affiliated with six main political parties as well as independent professional women and representatives of various women's study centers and human rights organizations. WATC organizations work together for the realization of the abolition of all forms of discrimination against women, thereby assisting in the creation of a civic democratic society characterized by equality and social justice.
