Professor David Bederman is quoted in the December 23 edition of The Age (Melbourne, Australia) on Japan's plans to kill thousands of whales that migrate up and down the east and west coasts of Australia.

Australia, as a contracting party to the Convention on the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR), has an obligation under the convention to make efforts to prevent others from conducting activity that is harmful to Antarctic marine living resources and to notify the commission when it becomes aware of harmful activity, said Bederman, a renowned expert on Antarctic law. This requirement, according to Bederman, "seems to impose an affirmative duty on contracting parties to loudly protest."
