Newsday Features Professor Levine Op-Ed on District Attorney Race

By: Beverly James

An op-ed written by Professor Kay Levine ran in the October 30 issue of Newsday. Levine discussed the district attorney race in Long Island between incumbent Denis Dillon and challenger Kathleen Rice.

"In the end, no prosecutor can handle every case about which he learns; the resources aren't there. And because they can't enforce every law equally, prosecutors have discretion to decide what's most important to their constituents. This is their greatest power," Levine wrote. "A vote in this election is a reflection of the candidate you most trust to make this judgment call."

Levine is an assistant professor of law at Emory University. She worked as a prosecutor in Southern California in the mid-1990s and has written extensively on prosecutorial discretion.
