Fineman Delivers Lectures at Illinois, Boston University Law Schools
Robert W. Woodruff Professor of Law Martha A. Fineman was invited speaker at the University of Illinois College of Law’s Ann Baum Memorial Elder Law Distinguished Lecture, held March 5.
The title of Fineman’s lecture was “The ‘Elderly’ as Vulnerable: Rethinking the Nature of Individual and Societal Responsibility.” She argued that current political rhetoric “pits the elderly generation against the others in a battle for a dwindling pot of economic and institutional resources.”
Such policy is flawed and “morally indefensible,” Fineman says. She suggests “a more just and fruitful analysis would begin with recognizing the universal and constant nature of human vulnerability.”
Fineman also delivered the annual distinguished lecture "Beyond Identities: The Limits of an Anti-discrimination Approach to Equality,” on Feb. 23 at Boston University School of Law. The lecture will be published in the Boston University Law Review.
