Mark your calendars for February 10, 2009 and plan to join the Emory Public Interest Committee (EPIC) as we celebrate the efforts of individuals making a difference in our legal community and raise money to assist the next generation of leaders as they prepare to enter the profession.
The EPIC Inspiration Awards Ceremony and Reception serves as EPIC's largest fundraising event of the year, to provide stipends to students who take otherwise-unfunded public sector summer jobs. This year's event will be held on February 10, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. in Tull Auditorium at Emory University School of Law.
The 2009 Awards will recognize the following individuals:
* Lifetime Commitment to Public Service Award:
Charles T. Lester, Jr. - Retired Partner, Sutherland
(to be presented by The Honorable Clarence Cooper)
* Outstanding Leadership in the Public Interest Award:
Gerry Weber - Former Legal Director, ACLU of Georgia; Senior Counsel, Southern Center for Human Rights
(to be presented by Stephen B. Bright, President and Senior Counsel, Southern Center for Human Rights)
* Unsung Devotion to Those Most in Need Award:
Marian Burge - Retired Deputy Director, Atlanta Legal Aid Society
(to be presented by Kathleen Dumitrescu, Former Managing Attorney, Atlanta Legal Aid Society's Cobb County Office)

Lifetime Award: Bucky Askew, Consultant on Legal Education to the
American Bar Association and former Director of Bar Admissions, Supreme
Court of Georgia from 1990 to 2006, as well as a most valued member of
the EPIC Advisory Board from 1997 to 2007 (to be presented by Justice
Leah Ward Sears)
Leadership Award: John Chandler, partner at Sutherland Asbill &
Brennan, for his work with the Guantanamo detainees (to be presented by
Charles Swift, the Navy lawyer responsible for litigating the U. S.
Supreme Court case of Hamdan v. Rumsfeld, and Visiting Associate
Professor/Acting Director of the International Humanitarian Law Clinic
at Emory Law School starting this fall)
Unsung Award: Aimee Maxwell, Executive Director of the Georgia
Innocence Project (to be presented by Calvin Johnson, Georgia's first
