Other Ongoing Oppportunities

Georgia Legal Services -

The Department of Transportation has been looking at its records and checking information against drivers' licenses for discrepancies. This means, for example, that suppose your given name was Frederick Jones (and that was the name on your birth certificate) but all your life you went by your middle name of John and had your driver's license issued in the name of John Jones there would be a discrepancy AND your driver's license would be suspended! This has been happening to lots of poor people – especially senior citizens. Someone needs to file a petition with the court or something to clear it up.

This is a great project for students wanting to do some pro bono work. They are simple, include client contact (so a student would have the opportunity to meet a grateful client!) and would not take too much time.

Please contact Lynnae Thandiwe at Georgia Legal Services if you are interested. This opportunity is open to all students. Students can volunteer on a continuous basis, or for a specific amount of time, what ever works best for them.

Email Thandiwe lthandiwe@glsp.org . to volunteer or for more information!

Color of Justice Program-

Emory University's Office of Community Programs and the Atlanta Public
School System are cooperating on a number of programs that involve
divisions of the University with the school system. This is an
opportunity for the law school to assist with one such program.

Mr. Ned Cannon is a member of the Georgia Committee on Access and Fairness in the Courts.  The Committee is chaired by Justice Hunstein and seeks to address a variety of social, economic and physical barriers which prevent average citizens from accessing the justice system.

One of our ongoing projects is the Color of Justice Program. This program is designed to encourage minority high school students to consider a career in the legal profession.  Our next COJ program is scheduled for next Saturday 9/29 at the Dekalb County Courthouse.  We have around 30 high school
students who will to attend.  In order to help the high school participants get a full understanding of what it takes to become a lawyer, we're looking for a few law students who might be willing to share their perspective in a small group setting.

Docent for the State Bar of Georgia Education Center

The State Bar of Georgia has created an education center designed to introduce students to the law. The facility includes a state-of-the-art gallery with interactive exhibits, a fully-functioning courtroom and a reproduction of Woodrow Wilson’s 1882 Atlanta law office. Students will tour the center and learn how the law influences their lives.

The education center distinguishes Georgia from every other state bar association in the country, and we believe that having law students and attorneys host our student guests will provide a tangible connection to the law.

In order to make the center a living expression of the law, we need your help. Consider volunteering as a docent. You can help us demonstrate citizenship ideals with students from all over the state and beyond. Each volunteer will be scheduled two to three times per year to guide four-hour tours.

NOTE: The Center held one docent training in October and will be scheduling another one.

For more info, or to be notified of the next training, contact:
