2008 Emory Civil Rights and Liberties Competition

The Emory Moot Court Society is pleased to announce the second annual Emory Civil Rights and Liberties Moot Court Competition to be held Friday October 10 - Sunday, October 12, 2008, at Emory University School of Law in Atlanta, GA.

This year's competition will feature a problem focused on current legal issues concerning civil rights and liberties. The rounds will be entirely judged by practitioners and judges.  Last year, we welcomed judges from three circuit Courts of Appeals to judge the final round.  We look forward to the same level of excellence in the judges we select this year, and the Moot Court society has already obtained commitments from distinguished attorneys and judges across the country.

We have limited space available for only thirty (30) teams, so if you are interested, please email Kimberly Coleman, kecolem@law.emory.edu, with questions.  You can download the registration form here: 2008 Registration Form. All registration forms and checks must be received no later than August 29, 2008.  All schools are limited to two (2) teams, each of which may be comprised of two (2) or three (3) students.  For teams registered before August 1, the cost is $275 for the first team and $225 for the second. For teams registered after August 1, the cost is $350 for the first team and $300 for the second.  All checks should be made payable to Emory University.  Schools do not need to know the names of the competing students at the time of registration.

The problem will be made available on this website on July 30, 2008 along with all other rules and important dates.  The briefs must be postmarked no later than September 15, 2008.  Rounds will begin on Friday, October 10 and will end with the finals on Sunday, October 12.  There will be two preliminary rounds before any elimination.  Awards and cash prizes will be given for runner-up, best oralist and best brief.

We have arranged for accommodations at the Emory Inn and Conference Center in Decatur, GA.  Transportation will be provided from that location to and from the competition. The Emory Inn can be reached at 404-712-6015. Please mention Emory Moot Court Society to obtain the discounted rate of $104.00/night.

Best,
