Emphasis on Practical Writing Skills

Emory Law provides numerous opportunities for students to learn and hone the basic skills of legal communication. First-year students complete a rigorous course covering both predictive and persuasive writing taught by full-time professors. After the first year, students complete an upper-level writing requirement by researching and writing a scholarly article. In addition, students can compete for participation in Moot Court Society (whose members write extensive briefs and participate in regional and national competitions) or Mock Trial Society. Emory Law’s outstanding law reviews include the Emory Law Journal, Emory International Law Review, and Emory Bankruptcy Developments Journal; students grade-on or are selected via a writing competition. Emory Law also offers a number of litigation and transactional skills classes in which hands-on training and document drafting play a significant role.

Award-Winning Advocacy Training

All second-year Emory Law students participate in the year-long Kessler-Eidson Program for Trial Techniques. Ranked consistently in the top 10 among trial advocacy programs nationwide, this rigorous program gives students the opportunity to hone their skills via an intensive, full-immersion education. By enlisting experienced trial lawyers, judges and academics, this program allows students a seamless transition into legal practice by providing opportunities to apply what they’ve learned in a real-world setting.

Joint Degree and Certificate Programs

Students can prepare themselves for careers in specific specialty areas by participating in interdisciplinary programs of interest. For example, students gain further specialized knowledge through joint degree programs such as the JD/MBA with Emory’s top-ranked Goizueta Business School and the JD/MPH with Emory’s renowned Rollins School of Public Health. In addition, students further prepare themselves for the practice of law through the Transactional Law Certificate Program, designed to give students the opportunity to focus a part of their training on the representation of business and commercial clients, and the Georgia Tech-Emory Law collaborative TI:GER Program in which law students work with business students to develop strategies for the commercial exploitation of innovations created by Georgia Tech researchers.

Real-World Experience

Our students are offered a number of programs that provide live-client experience in energized clinical settings. Emory Law offers an extensive, well-supervised field placement program. Each year, more than 130 students have the opportunity to work with judges, federal agencies, multinational corporations, district attorneys, public defender offices and public interest organizations.

The Turner Environmental Law Clinic has helped set new environmental standards in the country, training students to be effective environmental attorneys with high ethical standards and sensitivity to the natural environment. The Barton Child Law and Policy Clinic is a premier center for all aspects of child advocacy work. Students working in the clinic refine their advocacy and legal research skills while working closely with child welfare professionals, community leaders, attorneys, judges and elected officials. The Barton Juvenile Defender Clinic allows students to represent children in delinquency and other proceedings—providing advocacy in the areas of school discipline, special education, mental health and public benefits.
