A Message from the Dean

David Partlett, Dean and Asa Griggs Candler Professor of Law

There has never been a better time to pursue an Emory Law education.  Over the past year, we have been hard at work transforming this law school.  While many things have changed, we have remained true to our mission to educate principled lawyers and leaders for the twenty-first century.

Improving the Student Experience

This academic year, Emory Law welcomes nine new visiting and full-time faculty.  To make room for these new faces, and to make much-needed updates to our classrooms and common spaces, we recently completed a significant renovation project to Gambrell Hall.  We are dedicated to ensuring that our students’ intellectual, professional and physical home is second to none in the nation.

Creating Opportunities for Practical Learning

Emory Law is pleased to launch its new Center for Transactional Law and Practice and welcomes noted educator Tina Stark to our faculty as director of the center.  Tina has worked with law firms and other organizations to develop and train attorneys to handle today’s complex business legal transactions.

Defending the Public Interest

Emory has long held a commitment to public interest.  This year, through the fundraising efforts of the Emory Public Interest Committee (EPIC), we have been able to provide twenty-six students the opportunity to practice public interest law across the country.  Our students are working in public defender offices, for nonprofit organizations and associations, and for groups committed to the public good.  They are making a difference at both the local and national level.

Extending our Global Reach

We are pleased that next summer Emory will host its first program in International Law at Central European University in Budapest.  This month-long program will provide students the opportunity to undertake specifically designed courses of study in a setting with students drawn from around the world.

Launching New Clinics

I am pleased to welcome former LCDR Charles Swift as acting director of our new International Humanitarian Law Clinic and as visiting associate professor. Swift was instrumental in the Supreme Court case of Hamdan v. Rumsfeld.  Through this new clinic, our students will work with Swift to represent clients in a variety of cases.

Each new generation of students stands on the shoulders of the generation that came before.  We continue to build and strengthen our network of alumni and friends across the country so that our students will have a wealth of opportunities available to them.  I look forward to welcoming you to the Emory Law community.

Best regards,
David F. Partlett
