Professor Shanor Quoted in AJC Article on Supreme Court Nominee

By: Beverly James

Professor Charles Shanor is quoted in the October 31 edition of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution on how nominee Samuel Alito's confirmation will create a Catholic majority on the United States Supreme Court. Alito would join Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Anthony M. Kennedy, Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas to give the nine-member court a total of five Catholics.

Shanor, who teaches constitutional law at Emory University, said the emphasis on traditional values in the Catholic Church and Catholic schools may be one reason for the high court's current shift to a more conservative alignment.

The church and its schools emphasize "text and interpretation of text" and are concerned with "hierarchies and separation of powers," ideas that also fit with "conservative theories of what justices ought to be doing," Shanor said.
