Highly Publicized Cases Drive Increased Effort to Prevent Child Abuse

Following the Penn State child abuse case and the recent sexual assault and murder of a 7-year-old girl in Canton, Ga., interest in protecting children from molestation is unusually high, Georgia’s child advocates say.

Barton Child Law and Policy Center’s Kirsten Widner, who is director of policy and advocacy, was quoted Sunday in an Atlanta Journal-Constitution article on record numbers of adults enrolling in child abuse prevention courses and workshops.

“I think this combination of the Penn State scandal and this very horrific local child abuse case really does have people thinking how can we better protect kids and are we doing everything we could do,” Widner said.
